8-Year Old Joins the Fight Against Breast Cancer
For the past two years, Elaina, an 8 year-old girl living in a small town in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, has raised hundreds of dollars to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s (NBCF) mission to save lives.
Each year on her birthday, Elaina organizes and rallies her community to join her in a breast cancer walk through her nearby village. Elaina decorates a sun visor and presents a pink ribbon to each participant in the event. Inspired to impact her community, participants receive a pink balloon to carry during the walk as a reminder of the importance of breast cancer awareness.
“A couple years back, someone Elaina knew was diagnosed with breast cancer,” says Laura, Elaina’s mother. “Elaina became interested in raising money for this cause in the hopes of helping provide mammograms for those in need.”
In addition to dedicating her birthday to the cause, Elaina operates a lemonade stand in her neighborhood throughout the year and donates the funds to NBCF. She also saves her allowance money to include with her birthday donation and donates her hair to cancer survivors through the Locks of Love program.
Though still a young child, Elaina’s impact and passion for the cause are an inspiration to NBCF and women across the country facing breast cancer.

Firefighters Put on Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness
Firefighters with Clark County Fire District 6 in Vancouver, Washington, made a bold fashion statement this October when they wore pink instead of their traditional blue uniforms. Firefighters wore pink t-shirts to raise awareness and funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc (NBCF).
Breast cancer personally impacted the department earlier this year when Battalion Chief Todd Iremonger’s wife, Christina, discovered a lump and was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Christina had no family history of the disease, and a prior mammogram several months earlier had come back negative.
“It’s going to take years for her to recover from the chemotherapy and radiation treatments,” Todd Iremonger said. Christina has no family history of the disease.
The pink t-shirts were sold through the company, Fired-Up Graphics, which donated $12.00 of the $15.00 purchase price to NBCF. 213 t-shirts were sold during this year’s fundraiser and generated a donation of $2,500. Fire District 6 and Fired-Up Graphics plan to hold a similar fundraiser in 2011.
